Conclusions
The one-stage exchange procedure in the treatment of periprosthetic infections is possible and suitable if certain rules are respected, such as knowing about pathogen by puncture, choosing appropriate antibiotics for the bone cement, selecting suitable implants and having experienced surgeons work in close co-operation with microbiologists. Under these circumstances a success rate comparable to that of two-stage procedures can be achieved. But it must be remembered that our patients should need only one operation.
