Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière Presentation

History
The hospital of Salpêtrière was founded in 1656 to provide medical services to the poor people of Paris. Ever since the 19th century, the hospital has grown to encompass one of France’s most important schools in the field of neurological sciences. In the latter part of 20th century, the hospital’s renowned orthopaedic department came into its own under the authority of R. Roy Camille, with breakthroughs in spine surgery procedures.

Today Salpêtrière remains the largest hospital in Paris, with a capacity for 2100 patients. All medical specialities are represented at the hospital, with particular emphasis on neurological science, head and neck trauma, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and oncology.

Department of Neuroradiology
With its two MRI rooms, two CT-scan rooms, and three angiographic rooms, in addition to an echo Doppler and multipurpose radiographic room, Salpêtrière’s Department of Neuroradiology is one of the largest of its kind in France.

The department’s core activity is diagnostic neuroradiology, including advanced techniques in MRI (functional MRI, MRI spectroscopy, stereotaxy) in addition to interventional radiology for vascular brain, spine or spinal cord malformations.

Under the leadership of its director, the department recently worked to develop percutaneous vertebroplasty for spinal diseases, especially in the field of metastases.
