The Academic Hospital of Vrije University Brussels (AZ-VUB), located in the Brussels area, has 679 beds and treats over 25 000 patients per year. The hospital is linked to the university’s Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacology, serving as a centre for education as well as clinical and fundamental research.

Since 1996 the hospital’s prosthesis team has been running a hip arthroplasty register to aid quality control, the improvement of health care and clinical research. The team teaches Modern Cementing Techniques to future generations of orthopaedic surgeons and has recently started a research program on cement mantle quality.
